Stephen Lawrence Day 2019

Following on from Stephen Lawrence Day on the 22nd April, we were honoured the welcome Stuart Lawrence from the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust into school this week. He spoke at our Lower School assembly about his brothers legacy and the work that his family, and mother in particular, have done to support young people from disadvantaged backgrounds and in creating a more fair society for all. We heard how he was inspired by meeting Nelson Mandela and how the foundation has awarded bursaries to more than 130 students who might otherwise struggle to enter and complete the long journey of becoming an architect. Architecture was Stephens dream, and as I followed up on the work of the I read about another organisation Black Females in Architecture who I would also encourage students to follow if they are interested in this field. A number of our Sixth Form students attended the assembly and stayed to talk with Stuart afterwards. We hope that this is the start of a great relationship between Newstead Wood School and the charity and that we can support each other in the future.
