Year 12 Biology students have been exhibiting their yeast evolution project at the Young Researcher Zone in the prestigious Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition in London this week. This is the culmination of the research project that they have completed in collaboration with researchers from the University of Bath, since February.
The students have found this an invaluable experience, and a fabulous opportunity to build confidence with their communication of scientific ideas. They have thoroughly enjoyed meeting with members of the public, primary and secondary school students and fellows of the Royal Society, to explain their work. They have entertained school students with the games they devised to model how mutations in yeast enable new adaptations to arise. The students have also enjoyed the opportunity to visit other exhibits and ask detailed questions about the research.
Joseph, Savannah and Esiya introduced themselves to the current president of the Royal Society – Sir Adrian Smith - and chatted to him and Sir David Spiegelhalter about the yeast research they have been working on. All of the students involved did a stellar job of representing the school and they must have spoken to hundreds of people over the two days.
Congratulations to Maria, Joseph, Esiya, Savannah, Sahasra, Khushi and Melody for their hard work and success with the exhibition. Some of our Year 10 students also had the opportunity to visit the Summer Science Exhibition on Friday, and we hope they may also follow in the footsteps of Year 12 in the future.
