Your daughter will usually have one science teacher in Year 7 and in Year 8.
Topics taught in Year 7 are as follows:
Biology - Cells and Organisation, Organ Systems and Life Cycles
Chemistry - Particles, Substances and Mixtures, Chemical Changes, and Materials and the Earth.
Physics - Fundamentals in Physics, Sound and Light, Heating and Cooling, and Forces and Motion.
Topics taught in Year 8 are as follows:
Biology – Breathing and Digestion, Respiration and Photosynthesis, Evolution and Inheritance.
Chemistry – Matter, Chemical Reactions and Earth.
Physics – Waves, Forces, Energy and Electromagnets.
Year 9
In Year 9, students start their GCSE topics as outlined in the Curriculum Overview documents below, and science is taught separately as Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Your daughter will have one lesson per week of each subject which will usually be taught by a separate teacher.
How can you help your daughter?
- Test her regularly on topics covered.
- Check her weekly homework on the Sparx Science platform is complete.
- Get her to discuss what she has done in science lessons and get her to teach you some science every week.
- Watch relevant television programmes.
- Encourage her to use scientific vocabulary around the home.

Our online SharePoint resources via Office 365 also contain a wealth of resources to support learning.
Depending on your daughter's interests, magazines such as How it Works, New Scientist or National Geographic are all available which will help broaden your daughter’s understanding and appreciation of science.
Assessment
- Regular end of topic tests take place in class each half term.
- ‘Working scientifically’ will be assessed through practical activities in class and mini-investigations completed during the year.
- Your daughter will be encouraged to self-assess her work and reflect on progress at certain points in each topic.
