Drama

What will students be studying in Drama this year?

In Year 10 students will be exploring the set text “An Inspector Calls”, attending a live theatre performance and learning skills in analsyis and evaluation of performance elements. They will be devising their own original performance and practicing text performance.

In Year 11 students will be attending a production of a play. For the course students are expected to write a critical evaluation of live theatre and students will be putting together a set of preparation notes from the theatre visit in order to write their evaluation.

Students will also complete a 6 hours practical workshop on a theme, this will be improvisation based and will focus on the use of drama strategies, medium and elements for exploration. Students will, need to keep a written record of the workshop as they will be writing up a set of exploration notes to show their understanding.

Finally students will be working towards group performances that will take place in early May: these may be devised or scripted pieces.

What should my daughter do if she feels she is struggling in the subject?

Take the courage to chat to her teacher, we are here to help and encourage. We can support with positive learning conversations which will help to build her confidence.

We can also set achievable targets together. It is important that students feel comfortable and relaxed in a drama environment so that confidence and creativity can grow.

How can I support my daughter?

Chat to her about what she is doing in drama. Ask her about the theatre trips she has been on and if she has completed her notes for preparing the review. Encourage her to read theatre reviews in papers. Help her with learning lines for performances.

Homework

Depending on what we are working on, homework might be set exam questions, draft questions for coursework, diary notes for practical work, etc.

What kind of independent work should my daughter be completing

Preparing written notes from practical work and the theatre visit.

Researching reviews of plays she has seen and trying to get information about the staging of the production e.g. photographs, cast lists.
