Year 12 Art

Guidance for parents

What students will cover this year in Art?

This year will involve exploring media in greater depth and experimenting with materials and ideas. Work will be focused on process over product, that is to say they will trying out lots of new media and processes which will not necessarily result in finished pieces.

What skills are being developed this year in Art?

As always the basic skills we be touched on, and drawing will form a strong fundamental core, but it up to the student to decide which media they use and how they decide to work with the themes set.

Our expectations of students in Art

We expect students to be very open minded about the possibilities open to them and for them to explore new areas both in subject matter and media. They will have free time where they welcome to continue their work in the Art rooms and in the designated 6th form studio space.

What they should be doing at home?

Home work is 3 hours a week. This could be going to a gallery, taking photos, doing sketches, experimenting with media or researching an Artist.

What parents can do to help them make progress?

Check they are doing their homework weekly and keeping up with everything; not leaving anything until the last minute.

Who to contact if there is a problem?

The student needs to talk to the art teacher first if she is struggling with the work. The student can always come in to the Art rooms at lunchtime to catch-up with and finish work.

Ensure they have a good set of materials. The preferred media will vary from student to student so they need to invest some high quality materials they have not bought before.

Questions parents should ask their children about Art

The work done in yr. 12 is done over long a period and some homeworks are not set by the teacher each week. Ask what areas or ideas the teacher has suggested could be developed, and what areas they are particularly interested in. Check they feel that progress is going well and what needs to be done to move the work forward.
