Character Education

The choices an individual makes determine their future, and the purpose of developing good character is the ability to make good choices. Character allows us to flourish as individuals, and as a wider society. This is why the development of character, as well as achieving academic attainment, should be the purpose of education. ‘Character becomes your destiny’ Lao Tzu, Philosopher.

Character education addresses the statutory requirement to teach Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development (SMSC) and Relationships and Sex Education (RSE), as well as encouraging articulacy, resilience, leadership, teamwork, integrity, friendship and service.  Department of Education Guidance stresses the importance of Character Education when reflecting on the practice of excellent schools and what it takes to provide a well-balanced education.

Extra-curricular opportunities are extensive at Newstead, ensuring that all students are catered to. Our clubs and societies cover a diverse spectrum, with strong representation in areas such as Sports, Music, Debating, ICT, Languages, and the Duke of Edinburgh Award. Moreover, all students have the chance to shine in Performing Arts and Music events, showcasing their talents and creativity.

Our school takes learning beyond the classroom with a range of visits and trips, locally, nationally, and internationally. These experiences include thrilling adventures such as skiing trips, transformative Outdoor Education expeditions within the UK, and visits to iconic destinations like Auschwitz, California and Naples. We also offer numerous subject-specific journeys, such as language immersion trips to France, Spain, and Germany, as well as art-focused explorations both in the UK and abroad. Closer to home, we organise a plethora of visits such as Year 8 Camp and the much-loved Year 7 residential trip.

Student leadership is an important part of character development and students will have opportunities for leadership throughout their time at the school, through house competitions, sport and foundation studies. In Sixth Form, school student leaders will run societies and take any number of leadership positions as Head Students, House Captains, PSHE Ambassadors, Student Subject Leaders and many more.  This epitomises the students’ journey at Newstead, taking on leadership roles in the Sixth Form as they look to showcase the very best of their character for younger students as role models.

Each of these opportunities represents not just a chance for fun, but genuine learning and personal development for our students. At Newstead Wood School, we believe in nurturing well-rounded individuals who are equipped to excel in all aspects of life. Join us in embracing these exceptional learning and growth opportunities—it's where fun and education go hand in hand.
