On Wednesday 29 April, the Music Department held a joint Easter concert with St Olave’s at their school. It was an evening of amazing performances, uniting both schools through the celebration of music.
Year 7 Voices opened the concert with O Euchari in Leta Vita by Hildegard von Bingen before our student-led trio, Lucy (10G), Rachel (13W) and Eleanor (12G), beautifully sung Mendelssohn’s Lift Thine Eyes. Then, OG choir joined St Olave’s Chapel Choir in performing If Ye Love Me by Thomas Tallis, Brucker’s Locus Iste and Schubert’s famous Ave Maria, featuring soloist Sofia (11W).
After St Olave’s viola quartet (which included some ex-Newstead violists), our Chamber Choir joined the choirs for Mozart’s Ave Verum Corpus. To close the night, the choirs sung Fauré’s highly acclaimed Requiem, which was accompanied by a combined orchestra of Newstead and Olavian instrumentalists. Special mentions to Ana-Victoria (13N) on the organ and Lucy (10G), who sang the angelic soprano solo in the Pie Jesu.
It was a truly wonderful evening of everyone’s hard work, enthusiasm and talent. Well done to all the performers from both schools. Thank you to Mr Flanagan and St Olave’s Mrs Attwood for organising this concert, and thank you to all the staff who helped out on the day and in rehearsals. We look forward to working together more with St Olave’s in the future.
