Year 12 German

Guidance for parents

What will students be learning in German this year?

We use the AQA specification. Students will develop their linguistic skills alongside their understanding of the culture and society of the countries where German is spoken. There are 2 broad areas of study: aspects of German-speaking society (modern family life, the digital world, and youth culture) and Artistic Culture in the German-speaking world (festivals and traditions, art and architecture, Berlin past and present) and one film is studied.

Expectations of students in German

Students have four one hour lessons a week and regular homework. They will also have weekly individual conversation practice with the German assistant. During Y12 students will be learning to manage their time and work independently. In addition to their homework, they should review their lessons, consolidate vocabulary and grammar, and try to read and listen to German as much as possible. Useful online and library resources will be recommended to students. Students who do well tend to be those who do undertake such independent learning.

What are the major assessments this year?

Students who choose to take the AS examination at the end of Y12 will take mock exams during the year and the AS exam in May. There are 3 papers: 1:  Listening, reading and translation into English, 2:  translation into German and essay on the film 3: oral. Students continuing to Y13 will have end of year school exams. Throughout the year practice of exam style tasks and unit tests take place. Students will be assessed each term and will have the opportunity to review their progress in conversations with teachers. If students are in danger of underperforming, an individual Action Plan will be put in place.

What should my son/daughter do if they feel they are struggling?

First of all, they should not panic! It is natural to encounter difficulties sometimes, especially when adjusting to the different style of teaching in the sixth form and organising one’s own time. It is important to let the teacher know if they are having problems, so appropriate support can be given.

How can I support my son/daughter in Y12?

The main way parents can help at this stage is by encouraging their son/daughter to talk to them about what they are doing. Explaining something to someone else is a powerful way of consolidating one’s own understanding. Make sure they have the right environment for learning at home. Encourage them to take part in the enrichment activities offered e.g. BFI Film days, work experience in Germany.
