What will students be studying in Drama this year?

In Year 11 students will be attending a production of a play. For the course students are expected to write a critical evaluation of live theatre and students will be putting together a set of preparation notes from the theatre visit in order to write their evaluation.

Students will also complete a 6 hours practical workshop on a theme, this will be improvisation based and will focus on the use of drama strategies, medium and elements for exploration. Students will, need to keep a written record of the workshop as they will be writing up a set of exploration notes to show their understanding.

Finally students will be working towards group performances that will take place in early May: these may be devised or scripted pieces.

What are the major assessments this year?

  1. The written critical evaluation of live theatre.
  2. The 6 hour practical workshop on a theme.
  3. The written documentary evidence from the workshop.
  4. The unit 3 performance assessed by an external examiner.

What will the current performance grade be based?

The grade will be based on last the completed practical assessments and written coursework.

What should my daughter do if she feels she is struggling in the subject?

Take the courage to chat to her teacher, we are here to help and encourage. We can support with a positive learning conversations which will help to build her confidence.

We can also set achievable targets together. It is important that the students feel comfortable and relaxed in a drama environment so that confidence and creativity can grow.

How can I support my daughter in Year 11?

Chat to her about what she is doing in drama. Ask her about the theatre trips she has been on and if she has completed her notes for preparing the review. Encourage her to read theatre reviews in papers. Help her with learning lines for performances.

What kind of independent work should my daughter be completing

Preparing written notes from practical work and the theatre visit.

Researching reviews of the play she saw and trying to get information about the staging of the production they saw e.g photographs, cast lists.

Writing up notes from practical workshops and learning lines for performances.
