Year 12 Computing

Guidance for parents

What are students studying in Computing this year?

In Year 12, students follow the AQA Computer Science AS syllabus for specification 7516. This covers theoretical aspects of computing as well as programming in Python.

What are the major assessments this year?

Students taking the AS qualification sit a mock exam then a formal examination in the summer term. Those students continuing to the A level, will take an additional mock AS exam in the summer term before continuing to a formal examination at the end of year 13.

What will the current performance grade be based on?

Until the mock examination, the current performance grades are based on all the work completed in course by students, including classwork and homework as well as the end of topic assessments.

What should my child do if they feel they are struggling in the subject?

In the first instance, they should speak to their subject teacher, who will arrange additional support sessions. They should try to identify specific areas of the subject which they are finding a challenge so that we can offer targeted support. The school offers specialised support for students who have English as an additional language or who have specific needs like dyslexia or ASD.

How can I support my child in Year 12?

The best way to provide general support to Year 12 students is by talking to them about their work in the subject and how things are going. Additionally, you may wish to discuss the impact of IT in everyday life and how it affects you on topics such as privacy and at work.

What kind of independent work should my child be completing?

The best performing students are those that program outside of lessons regularly, in addition to reviewing class notes and work covered, they should also keep up to date with developments in IT.
