Year 12 Geography

Guidance for parents

What will students be studying in Geography this year?

In Year 12, students will be following the AS course of study. The course comprises of two units. Global Challenges made of the topics World at Risk , looking at natural hazard trends, impacts and management  and Going Global looking at Globalisation, development and population issues. The Geographical Investigations unit is made up of Crowded Coasts and Rebranding Places which have a strong fieldwork and research base and will involve fieldtrips including London Docklands and East London Development, Hastings and a Residential trip to South Devon to look at Urban and Rural rebranding and Coastal Management.

What are the major assessments this year?

As well as completing past exam questions for homework, students in Year 12 will sit a mock AS level examination.

What will the current performance grade be based on?

Until their mock examination, their current performance will be based on past exam questions that they complete either in class or for homework.  Their mock examination result gives us a much better predictor of how they might do in the summer examination.

What should my son/ daughter do if she feels they are struggling in the subject?

Your son / daughter should speak to her Geography teacher in the first instance and she may be offered additional support or additional reading to help her understanding of the topic.  They may be paired with another student to support them.

How can I support my son / daughter in Year 12?

The best way to support your son / daughter is by talking to them about what they are studying in Geography and  about how they are getting on.  Students should be encouraged to complete homework in a timely manner.  Encouraging wider reading, appropriate documentaries, an appreciation of world current affairs are all useful to create a more holistic approach to their Geography.

What kind of independent work should my son /daughter be completing?

During Year 12, we strongly encourage students to work as independently as possible to prepare them for A2 study.  The best performing students are those who regularly review their class notes and read around the subject to consolidate their geographical knowledge and gain a deeper and more holistic view of the world.
