Guidance for parents

What will students be studying in Economics this year?

In Year 13 students will study Unit 3 and Unit 4 on the Edexcel Economics course, covering Business Economics and Economic Efficiency as well as the Global Economy

What are the major assessments this year?

For unit 3 there will be a series of assessments focusing on developing the students’ skills in data responses and multiple choice. For unit 4, students will also be set essays. Students will do some of these assessments in class and some at home.

What will the current performance grade be based on, and what do the levels mean?

Until their mock examination, their current performance will be based on the assessments and homework that they complete. Their mock examination result gives us a much better predictor of how they might do in the summer examination and will be used as evidence of their current performance on their written report.

What should my child do if they feel they are struggling in the subject?

They should speak to their Economics teacher who can arrange support sessions and provide further reading.

How can I support my child in Year 13?

Talking to them about news stories concerning the domestic and global economy will be extremely useful – the unit 4 essay is partly assessed on the ability of students to incorporate relevant evidence to justify theoretical points. Attention could also be paid to the clarity of the points they make during these discussions – a lack of clarity verbally will be generally be reflected in the points they write in assessments, particularly under time constraints, one of the key criticisms that is consistently made by examiners on the overall quality of the responses they receive.

What kind of independent work should my daughter be completing?

A discounted subscription to The Economist magazine is available through the school and we strongly encourage A2 students to take this up – keeping up to date with the latest developments will help them to provide the evidence required in the formal assessments. The best performing students are those who regularly review their class notes and chapters from their textbook, consolidating their theoretical knowledge, broadening their scope for analysis and evaluation.
