Welcome to our Sixth Form

We recognise that making a decision about where to complete your post GCSE education can be a difficult one.

The Sixth Form at Newstead Wood School provides students with a challenging, exciting and varied curriculum as well as many unique opportunities for student leadership and enriching extra-curricular activities.

We offer a co-educational Sixth Form centre offering a wide range of A Level courses and additional pastoral support and a program of information and support for all students to help them with their decisions for undergraduate study and life ‘Beyond Newstead’. Our A Level results are excellent and our students go onto to great success in their first choice of undergraduate institution including a significant proportion of students making successful Oxbridge applications.

If you are considering your post GCSE options, please look at our admissions criteria for the Sixth Form and apply online.

The Sixth Form at Newstead Wood School is a community which seeks to unlock the potential of all its students and provide them with a curriculum which stretches and challenges them to reach their potential. We believe that our students have huge potential to lead and inspire others and are provided with a wide range of opportunities to lead whole school activities, provide mentoring and teaching opportunities and contribute to the school and wider community.

We recognise that an important part of school life is ‘Learning Beyond the Classroom’ and as such an important emphasis is put on taking students out of the classroom and exposing them to looking at how the theory they are taught in the classroom is put into practise in the wider world. History and Politics students have enjoyed a trip to the European city of Strasbourg to support their understanding of the development of the EU and they were joined by Economics students in February on a trip to New Year and Washington. Students in Year 12 and 13 recently enjoyed a trip to Greece and Italy to support and consolidate their understanding of the Ancient World and History students enjoyed a trip to Moscow and St Petersburg earlier this year.

We understand that every student is an individual which is why we offer a variety of pathways in the Sixth Form. The vast majority of students will choose 4 subjects to study in Year 12 and will sit an AS exam in one of these in the summer of 2018. However, this may not be appropriate for all students and so we also can offer a course comprising of 3 subjects plus an EPQ (Extended Project Qualification) The Extended Project Qualification is offered to all students in the Sixth Form and all are paired up with a member of staff as a mentor for one to one help and advice. Year 12 have a liberal arts lecture timetabled into their week which is a valuable opportunity to hear talks from external speakers and inform and guide them through the UCAS process.

An important part of Sixth Form life is the development of the role of subject student leaders who are appointed by Heads of Department in the Spring Term of Year 12 and play an important role in leading and developing the role of departments within the school. These students talk to prospective parents and students at Open Evening/Open Day events and run revision sessions for GCSE students as well as providing staff with enthusiastic recruiters for GCSE courses.

The school has 6 houses – Nightingale, Wren, Swift, Falcon, Griffin and Phoenix and new students in the sixth form will be in Phoenix house. Inter house competitions play a large role in the life of the school and the input of our sixth formers into these events is invaluable. In the sixth form, students are invited to participate in inter house netball and football matches, weekly quizzes and play an important role in assisting other phases of the school with a wide range of house activities ranging from arranging Performing Arts, assemblies and charitable house weeks. A recruitment process at the end of Year 12 sees the appointment of 18 House Captains who are responsible for leading and inspiring forms from other years in their houses.
